Dos Manos is a lovely place to go for a late lunch on a cold, winter morning.
After shopping for a new book at Melville's Love Books, I decided to have a late lunch at Pablos House's restaurant, Dos Manos. The following is a review on the restaurants design and the two dishes I tried.
Interiors: Design and Decor
For an Italian restaurant the interior design felt very safari. In general, any restaurant in South Africa that resorts to a safari theme always leaves me feeling frustrated because its just lazy design work. It would be one thing if the menu was an Italian South African fusion— but it wasn’t. The whole menu was made up of Italian options and so the interior decor did feel bit off. And at the same time, I did enjoy the colour pallet. The browns, greens and sprinkles of black created a very warm, sophisticated environment. There were heaters all through out the restaurant which is so necessary for enjoying a meal comfortably as the weather becomes cooler. The view of North Johannesburg is probably my favourite feature of the resturant. the view, and their Bianca Pizza will probably have me coming back.
Pizza Bianca
Gruyere, Creme Friache, Red Onion, Coppa Ham, Parsley
The Pizza crust was thin with a voluminous, yet crunch end. The cream friache base gave it an overall lighter taste that the traditional tomato and cheese base. The gruyere lended a depth of flavour that didn’t weigh the pizza down. The cherry tomatoes gave the pizza a vibrance and contributed to the lightness of the pizza. The thin coppa ham and red onion aded to the crunchiness of the pizza- probably my favourite textural element of this dish.
I found that this was a very safe, satisfying dish to choose.
Spaghetti Agile E Olio
Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Fresh Parsley, Garlic, White Wine, Prawns
The pasta was a touch on the oily side, I was expecting the white wine in the sauce to cut the oil more than it did. I felt that the dynamism that white wine usually gives to pasta dishes was missing from this one and I wish they were more generous with the wine. The dish can be ordered as a vegetarian dish, or with aded prawns or chicken. I usually enjoy pastas that combine white wine with prawns and so I opted for that. The added prawns gave the pasta a fresh crunch and an overall lift from the oiliness of the dish.
Final Thoughts: The Final Score
Next time I am in Melvile, I would certainly go back to Dos Manos. Its a lovely place to go for lunch on a cold, winter day. Rating: 6 out of 10. The view, service and the pizza were the saving graces of this resturant.
